The trick is the air supplied. If you don’t provide your hydroponic plants with adequate oxygen, they will drown or suffocate. The root of plants must be supplied with air for optimal growth so aerating water for plants is important. So, plants require oxygen to breathe or respire.

Theoretically it is not possible due to the surface tension of water extending to the surface of the plant and it will cut the supply of air. However, creating a well engineered hydroponics system for zero-gravity purposes may work if the unit and the carrier itself is suitable for growing such plants.
