Aquaponics refers to a system that couples aquaculture and plants hydroponics in a recirculating or mutually beneficial ecosystem. In aquaponics, plants utilize nutrients that come from fish waste, which if left in the pond will be toxic to the fish.

Aquaponics is Organic While hydroponics is all about using a sterile environment to grow, aquaponics is the exact opposite and uses the closed loop eco-system to full effect. With bacteria and worms being used to break down ammonia and solid waste that is produced by the fish, these nutrients are then passed to the plants.

Aquaponics is a combination of hydroponics and aquaculture. With an aquaponics garden, you have the same basis as hydroponics with a couple of differences. With this process, you will grow your plants hydroponically but also be using aquaculture to feed the plants.

Are both aquaponics and hydroponics organic? Yes they are; both are ways of gardening organically; with aquaponics you will create a small and self contained ecosystem in a fish pond whose water you will then feed to your plants; with hydroponics you will put organic nutrients into the water yourself.

In hydroponics, plants are cultivated using a nutrient mix made by humans, whereas in aquaponics, plants, and fish both are cultivated in a symbiotic nutrient system. In hydroponics, the nutrient is manmade, and in aquaponics, the fish waste is used as the nutrient source.
